Summer heat can put intense pressure on your HVAC unit. Giving it relief during the months filled with 90+ degree temperatures can help prevent breakdown and keep your unit running its best. Treat your unit a little cooler with these 5 tips.

Allow Air to Circulate
It is important to clear any obstructions from the air vents in your home. Your system
will not have to work as hard to circulate cool air in the home if all of the vents are opened and unobstructed, allowing the air to pass through freely.

Clean your AC Unit on a Regular Basis
Your outdoor AC unit will get dirty, just from being outdoors. Cleaning the dust, dirt,
leaves, and any other debris will keep your AC unit working optimally. When your
outdoor unit is clean, the chance of a mechanical breakdown is much less.

Give your Air Conditioner a Rest
Experts recommend increasing your home’s temperature in the summer by 5 to 10 degrees from your ideal comfort level for at least eight hours per day (mostly at night and when you’re gone). Doing so helps to prolong the life of your AC unit because it will not be left running day in and day out. Plus, it can help save you money on your annual heating and cooling costs.

Clean the Ducts
In some circumstances, air ducts may be the reasons cool air is not reaching your home. If the air ducts are dirty, it can slow down the air flow into your home. Dirt and debris accumulate inside the air ducts over time which makes it difficult for the cold air to pass through. Scheduling regular air duct cleaning will prevent the air from being slowed by dirt or dust, and also help to improve the indoor air quality in your home. Air duct cleaning should be done at a minimum, once per year before the air conditioner needs to be used on a regular basis.

Change the Filter
Changing your air conditioner’s filters frequently will help prevent them from getting clogged. Replacing the filters in your air conditioning unit will extend the lifespan of your unit, improve the overall efficiency, and save you money on energy costs.
