It doesn’t matter how hot it is outside — you should always feel comfortable in your home. Here are a few tips to help you stay cool this summer and save a little money at the same time:
Set your thermostat as high as you comfortably can this season.
The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
On hot days, avoid using the oven and making it hotter.
Instead, cook on the stove, use a microwave oven, or grill outside.
Make sure you keep plants at least 3-6 feet from your unit, so that your unit can operate at peak efficiency.
Take advantage of your ceiling fan.
Using your ceiling fan can make you feel about 4°F cooler, and it could save you money. Be sure to only use the ceiling fan when someone is in the room, however. It only cools the person, not the actual room temperature.
Instead of turning your air conditioner off when you leave for the day, try raising the temperature 7-10 degrees.
This keeps your unit from working harder than it needs to when you return home, and it can save you almost $200 a year.
Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat.
The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
Pay attention to placement.
Poor furniture placement affects more than just the feng shui. If objects are blocking your AC vents, your unit will have to work harder than necessary to cool your home.
