Spring has arrived in Arkansas in full swing, and although we’re happy to see it show up, this sunny season didn’t arrive empty-handed. Pollen, bacteria and allergens were brought along, and no amount of locked doors or Lysol spray can keep them out of your home. Only one thing can– HVAC air filters, and you have plenty of price points to choose from.

If you’re an allergy sufferer or pet owner, run–don’t walk, from this category! These wallet-friendly options may be enticing at first, but unfortunately, they’ve been known to trap less than 20% of contaminants and next to 0% of bacteria trying to enter your home. That being said if you’re one of the lucky ones who don’t suffer from seasonal sicknesses and are looking to stay on a tight budget, this may be an option for you. You’ll simply need to commit to checking your filters more than the average 30 days. If you spy dirt buildup on the outside of your vent, you’ve already waited too long.

This is the category where your average, pleated filter resides, and where the general public tends to congregate towards. At 50-70% removal, a medium-efficiency air filter does a much better job at blocking out allergens than its predecessor. To differentiate itself further, many filters found in this “happy medium” section have specific specialties such as dust control or odor removal. You’ll shell out anywhere between $5-$25 more for a filter found in this section, but you’ll also be more likely to get your money’s worth.

We hate to admit it (to ourselves and our wallets), but the more expensive filtration systems do in fact create better air quality in your living space. Costs rise as MERV ratings do, so if your price is higher, your filter is also better at catching particles that its competitors. If you suffer from allergies or have indoor pets, your health may be worth committing yourself to this category of filtration. The cost will be higher– but so will your convenience.
